Unlike most illustrators Grace Helmer paints in oil; both sequentially in a comic book style as well as in the language of an abstract painter. Oil has given her the freedom, has allowed her, to explore and create rich compositions that give an added depth and nuance to such diverse projects as Primo Levi’s short stories including ‘The Fugitive’, ‘One Night’ and ‘A Tranquil Star’ and ‘The Solitaire mystery’ by Jostein Gaarder.
Through her love of literature and comic books she has managed to create a unique style that fulfils her passion for the written word and develop her own visual language. No mean feat. I too am in love with literature and comics but have never been able to reconcile the two. It’s a difficult process. I must look into buying some of her Primo Levi short stories from her site. Look into her work alot more.
